Juneteenth is June 19th and if you’re like me, you’ve probably never really observed it. Here’s what you can do about it this weekend.
Thanks to Memphis’ Black arts nonprofit organization, The CLTV (The Collective), you will be able to celebrate and commemorate the independence of slaves in America.
Sponsored by We Are Memphis, Hyde Family Foundation, and First Tennessee, The Juneteenth Gala will consist of a cocktail hour, a soul food catered dinner and an after-party that will include performances.
As a tribute to our ancestors’ perseverance and to continue the push toward freedom, the organization themed the event: “On the Shoulders of Giants”. Feel free to dress the part in your African attire, but please y’all be you – it’s not a costume party.
According to The CLTV, proceeds from the event will go directly to its black creatives and supporting the community. Check out the promo video below.
The CLTV’s Juneteenth Gala will be held Saturday, June 22nd, from 6:30 pm to midnight at The CMPLX in Orange Mound (2234 Lamar Ave). There are separate tickets for VIP, the actual gala, and to the after party. To purchase tickets, click here.
